Newly elected Senator Scott Brown will be in Norwood Friday to try to help the School Committee beat Selectmen in a fundraising basketball game. Brown’s daughter, Ayla, will play on the Selectmen side.

Selectmen Chair Bill Plasko announced the Browns’ appearance Tuesday night during the Selectmen meeting.

Friday’s game, at 7 p.m., will be part of a 24-hour basketball fundraiser held by the Norwood Basketball Association for Matt Brown, a Norwood High varsity hockey player who was paralyzed after an injury on the ice in January. The games will start Friday at 3 p.m. and end Saturday at the same time.

Sen. Brown, a Republican, was elected to fill the seat of the late Ted Kennedy in January. Ayla, a former American Idol semi-finalist and a Boston College basketball player, will be singing the national anthem Friday and signing autographs after the game, Plasko said.

About 880 people have registered to participate in the basketball marathon, with slots still open for games from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Norwood Public Access television will air live the game between the Selectmen and School Committee and will tape five hours of the event to play later.

Norwood Basketball plans to have 80 teams to play for 30 or 60 minute shifts. The cost is $10 per player, with a maximum of 12 players per team.

Teams playing in the peak hours (3 p.m. to midnight and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) will be limited to 30 minutes of play. Teams playing off-peak (midnight to 8 a.m.) will play for 60 minutes.
